Work Experience

The purpose of the Work experience program is to familiarize students with the world of work and give them the opportunity to explore careers and to possibly open up opportunities for either apprenticeship programs or permanent placement. Supervision and evaluation is done by both the Work Experience Coordinator and the Workstation Supervisor.

This course offers an excellent opportunity to experience what a career would be like without waiting to obtain required prerequisites. Since this course is a cooperative effort between the school and community, there is an expectation for students to maintain a good work ethic and mature level of responsibility.

The following conditions apply:

Prerequisite: HCS 3000 must be completed before Work Experience credits are issued. May be taken concurrently with Work Experience. Can be used as a 30 level credit for graduation purposes.

The program is recommended to students in Grade 11 and 12. The choice of the Work Experience activity is the responsibility of the student, with parent approval. The Work Experience Coordinator is responsible for the proper placement of students at approved sites. Students can earn up to 30 credits in Work Experience, 15 credits of which can be used towards their diploma. One credit is earned for every 25 hours of supervised work.

This course relies heavily on independent student work. Students choosing to enroll in this course should be prepared to conduct themselves in a responsible manner.

Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)

The program is designed to permit high school students to work on the first year of their chosen apprenticeship, while still meeting their graduation requirements. For each 125 hours worked, you can receive 5 credits from the school, plus use the hours towards your first year apprenticeship.

  • No hours will be counted until all paperwork is submitted*
  • TimeSheets are due monthly and are your responsibility, so get them in ASAP!
